ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY
At Jesmond Dene House, we recognise the effects our business has on the environment and are committed to minimising and controlling our impact through responsible environmental management.
Our Commitment:
- To reduce our amount of non-recyclable waste
- We have reduced the number of general waste bins we have and replaced these with dry recycling, food and glass bins.
- Our Green Team are in charge of training new team members and ensuring that recycling is being carried out throughout the hotel
- We have a composting system
- We recycle used batteries and lightbulbs
- To monitor Suppliers
- We use locally sourced food suppliers as much as possible e.g. we use local meat and dairy producers
- We buy in bulk to reduce the number of deliveries
- We look to use fruit and vegetables which are in season
- We use local breweries for many of our beers
- We grow our own fruit and herbs in the garden
- To monitor our energy and water usage and regularly look for ways to reduce this
- We have a Power Perfector to help reduce our electricity usage
- We have a smart meter for our electric and we read our gas meter manually on a monthly basis
- We are currently replacing our bulbs with LED lights
- We encourage our guests to re-use their towels (signs ask guests to leave towels in the bath when they would like them changing)
- We change bed linen after 3 days of a stay unless requested
- We use rainwater (from a water butt) to water the plants in the gardens
- We have signs displayed around the staff areas, encouraging staff to switch off lights and computers when they are not in use
- We have signs displayed in the kitchen to encourage staff to turn off taps
- Motion sensored extraction fans in the bathrooms
- Housekeeping monitor the temperature of the rooms when cleaning and turn off radiators when heating is not necessary
- Aerated showerheads reduce water usage
- Dual flush toilets reduce water wastage
- Encourage the use of public transport and provide facilities for cyclists and pedestrians
- We are less than 10 minutes’ walk from public transport
- We encourage guests to walk whilst staying at the hotel. Maps of Jesmond and Newcastle City Centre are available at the reception desk
- We have secure storage for cycles
- We have electric car charging points close in the hotel entrance, which guests can use to charge electric cars
- Reduce the amount of paper usage
- We use email for correspondence with guests and staff where possible, to reduce the use of paper
- Guests can view sample menus, facilities and live bedroom availability ahead on our website, reducing print materials
- We reduce our paper usage by printing double sided whenever possible
- Newspapers and scrap paper are recycled as a fuel source for the open fires
- Help the Local Environment
- We donate old furniture/furnishings/crockery to local charities
- We donate vouchers as raffle prizes to local charities
- We have bird houses and feed to encourage local wildlife
- We have gardeners to look after the gardens, de-weeding and maintain the mature trees
Our Environmental Policy is reviewed by the Management Team on a Quarterly Basis.
