STEPHEN NEWTON

Stephen Newton’s tiny black and white etchings, for all their small scale, have an overwhelming intensity. They depict everyday objects – a chair, a staircase, a mirror – but stripped of the normal, conventional contexts. The staircase will lead nowhere, the chair will be in the corner of an empty room, a door to an empty room will be ajar. Nothing is explained but you feel something significant has just happened – or is about to happen. It opens the mind to all sorts of possibilities not normally provoked by these ordinary objects. It comes as no surprise to learn that Newton studied psychotherapy after studying fine art. His paintings and etchings hang in the entrance hallway and on the lower ground floor.

Biography: Born in 1948, Stephen Newton studied Fine Art at Leeds University and Nottingham Polytechnic before taking an MA in Art and Psychotherapy at Sheffield University where he also completed a PhD in Psychoanalysis and Creativity.
