SIMON NICHOLAS

During the mid-nineties, Simon Nicholas worked for several months in New York. Like most first-time visitors, he was fascinated by the scale, the movement, the complexity, the infinite perspectives, the dizzying heights and canyons of the city. He created a series of paintings and charcoal drawings that capture both the grid-like patterns of streets and multi-floored buildings and the constant, heady swirl of people. Taken from vertiginous viewpoints half-way up a skyscraper, they create a sensation of almost tumbling into the street. His charcoal drawing, ‘City Interiors’, hangs in the dining room.

Biography: Born in London in 1954, Simon Nicholas studied at Camberwell School of Art. He gained a residency in Oslo, living and working in Edvard Munch’s original studio. He continues to live and work in the city.
