Jesmond
Jesmond is Newcastle’s most cosmopolitan residential area. A mix of leafy streets, period architecture, cafes and independent shops, it’s home to a buzzing population from young professionals to families, with many working in the media, arts, universities and hospitals.
A great place to unwind is Jesmond Dene, next to the hotel. This small, wooded valley is criss-crossed with paths and dotted with waterfalls, grottoes and historic buildings plus rustic bridges over the River Ouseburn. Take a stroll or a jog (pick up a leaflet at Reception), relax in the café or take the children to the playground or to Pet's Corner to see the goats, rabbits, alpacas and cockatiels. You might also catch kingfishers, squirrels, otters and ducks roaming free. There are regular activities, such as Rangers’ guided walks, and open-air productions in the summer.
Walk 10 minutes from the hotel in the other direction from the Dene and you’re in the heart of Jesmond. Streets such as Acorn Road, Brentwood Avenue, Clayton Road and St George’s Terrace have specialist shops including fashion, gifts, jewellery, antiques, food and homewares as well as delicatessens and a wine merchants. There are pavement cafes, friendly pubs - Osborne Road is legendary for its bars - neighbourhood bistros, and several Italian and Indian restaurants. Walk further and you’ll find the wide, open spaces of the Town Moor or hop on the Metro to be in the city within five minutes.
